The Avro Vulcan was designed by the extraordinary Roy Chadwick in 1947. The first prototype flew on the 31st August 1952 and appeared at Farnborough just a few days later. Designated type 698 she has a delta wing design and over time has become a true icon of British engineering.
The Avro Vulcan was operated by the Royal Air Force from 1953 until 1984. The Vulcan was part of the RAF's V bomber force, fulfilling the role of nuclear deterrent against the Soviet Union during the Cold War and was also used in a conventional bombing role during the Falklands conflict with Argentina.
Over a fifteen year period XH558 was fully restored and on the 5th July 2008 she displayed in front of the public at RAF Waddington. The Vulcan finally returning to the skies has captured the hearts of people around the world.
This is the story of the Vulcan from the original design through to today.
